Abstract

Core−shell nanoparticles with a polystyrene core and a hybrid copolymer shell are synthesized via emulsion polymerization of styrene and subsequent addition of γ-methacryloyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) to produce the shell by copolymerization reaction of MPS with the residual amount of styrene. The kinetics of copolymerization and hydrolysis−condensation reaction are studied by gas chromatography (GC) and solid-state 29Si NMR along with the emulsion polymerization process. A complete model of the reaction mechanisms is developed, and the results are compared with the experimental data.
