Abstract

The kinetics of replacement of aqua ligands of hexaaquorhodium(III) ion by thiocyanate ion in aqueous media have been studied spectrophotometrically. The reaction rate is pH-dependent in the pH 1–3 range and is independent of the incoming ligand concentration. Activation parameters, calculated by studying the reaction in the 45°–60°C range, suggest a primary H2O dissociation-controlled process and are comparable to the activation parameters of an H2O exchange process.
