Abstract

The mechanism of reaction between sulfur and nickel oxide in the solid state was studied by chemical analysis, TGA, and capillary diffusion methods. Nickel oxide and sulfur react in the molar ratio 3 : 1 to give Ni 3S 5 · 3H 2O. The data for lateral diffusion fit best in the equation ξ n = kt. It has been also suggested by thermal analysis that S −2 ions are formed which are exchanged by 0 −2 ions.
