Abstract
The reaction is of first order with respect to Ce(IV) and of a complex order with respect to hypophosphite, depending upon the relative magnitude of K 7[H 3PO 2] and one. Hydrogen ions increase the rate and sulphate ions decrease it. The rate determining step is preceeded by an equilibrium involving a complex of hypophosphite and Ce(IV). Various other strong sulphate complexes of Ce(IV) also exist in solution. The pseudo first order constants may be calculated from the complicated rate expression: − d[ Ce(IV)] dt = k 1K 7[ H +][ H 3 PO 2][ Ce(IV)] K 3[ HSO 4 −][1+K 7( H 3 PO 2)] Ionic strength does not seem to have any influence on the rate of this reaction. Ag(I) and Mn(II) catalyse the reaction.
