Abstract

1. In the upper region of the σ-N curve, fatigue fracture of magnesium alloys MA2-1 and MA12 can take place by different mechanisms, regardless of the stress amplitude: by an H-mechanism for alloy MA2-1 and by an F-mechanism for alloy MA12. 2. Development of fatigue in alloy MA2-1 takes place, without the appearance of stable slip bands, by inception of cracks and their growth perpendicular to the applied loads at different degrees of acceleration. 3. Fatigue fracture of alloy MA12 takes place by formation of stable slip bands, the growth of submicrocracks in them in stage I being followed by spreading of the microcraks in stage II at a high rate owing to union of the stable slip bands formed in the microcrack zone and their eventual combination into a main crack.
