Abstract
Kinetics of oxidation of pyruvic acid (Pyr) by peroxomonosulphate (PMS) has been studied in aqueous acidic medium. The observed stoichiometry corresponds to the reaction as represented by the eq. (i), HSOs + CH 3 COCO 2 H →CH 3 CO 2 H + CO 2 + SO 2- 4 + H + (i) The reaction is simple second order and the rate law given by the eq. (ii) was derived from the proposed mechanism. d[PMS] / dt = kK d [PMS] [Pyr] / [H]+K d (ii).
