Abstract

The crystallization kinetics of ZrF 4BaF 2LaF 3AlF 3 glasses, with the addition of different amounts of InF 3, have been studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Values for the activation energy of crystallization ( E), Hruby parameter ( K g1) and the transformation temperature T g over the melting temperature T m,( T g/ T m), were determined. The results show that when the appropriate amount of InF 3 was added E, K g1 and T g/ T m increased, the resistance to crystallization improved and the glass-forming ability increases. The amounts and types of the crystalline phases formed dependend on the InF 3 content. The effects of InF 3 on the ZBLA glass properties are fairly similar to the anomalous effects for some glasses containing boron. A glass having better properties is obtained with the addition of 1.0 mol% InF 3.
