Abstract

The dependence of the nitration rates of toluene in an aqueous phase on reaction temperature and mixed acid composition has been examined. Ternary solutions HNO 3 -H 2 SO 4 -H 2 O with compositions normally employed in industrial applications have been used as the nitration medium. The activation energy was found to increase with an increase in either the HNO 3 content of the nitration medium at constant water content or the H 2 O content at constant HNO 3 content. A kinetic equation is proposed which is applicable over the whole range of conditions used
