Abstract
Two independent particle methods, which are based on the Vlasov fluid model, have been developed to examine the modification of magnetohydrodynamic instabillities due to finite orbit effects. The relative cost and accuracy of the methods, the dispersion functional analysis and initial value method, are discussed and the results of applying the methods to a field-reversed, magnetic confinement geometry are presented.
