Abstract

1. The kinetics of the isomerization of n-butane over chlorine-promoted alumina-platinum catalyst have been studied. 2. The rate of isomerization is directly proportional to the partial pressure of butane and inversely proportional to that of hydrogen. The apparent activation energies of the forward and reverse reactions are 14 and 16 kcal/ mole, respectively. 3. An equation is proposed for representing the low-temperature isomerization of n-butane over an alumina-platinum catalyst. Satisfactory agreement is shown between the experimental data and the calculated data.
