Abstract

Kinetic mechanism of heterogeneously catalyzed transesterification process for production of biodiesel from vegetable oils has been proposed and validated by experimental data generated and the data available in literature. An Eley–Rideal type of mechanism was proposed, and unknown kinetic parameters were determined using non linear regression. A good fit of experimental data and proposed mechanism was found with adsorption equilibrium constant value of 0.01 (m3/mol)3 and surface reaction equilibrium constant value of 0.001 (mol/m3)2. However, the value of desorption equilibrium constant for glycerol is in the range of 105–106 m3/mol. The adsorption kinetic constant varies from 0.001 to 0.024 (m3/mol)3(mol/kg.cat.s).
