Abstract

Kinetic model results are presented for desorption of OH radicals formed during the reaction H 2 + 1 2 O 2 → H 2O on Pt. The results are compared with recent experimental results using laser-induced fluorescence. Variation in the apparent activation energy for OH desorption with H 2/O 2 ratio can be attributed to kinetic effects. The model study shows how measurements of the OH desorption rate versus temperature can be used to obtain information about unknown surface rate constants for the water formation on Pt and how the true, rather than the apparent energy of OH desorption can be obtained. Using published experimental data in the model calculation we estimate the true desorption energy of OH to be in the range 1.4–1.7 eV.
