Abstract

A kinetic isotope effect in the rate of adsorption of hydrogen on polycrystalline tungsten has been sought, following the report of such an effect on a (100)-oriented tungsten crystal. However, no difference between the isotopes could be detected. The reason for these discordant results may lie either in an unidentified experimental artefact or in a genuine difference between oriented and polycrystalline surfaces.
