Abstract

Electrochemical coal oxidation in sulfuric acid has been investigated by a controlled potential coulometric technique. Both kinetic and analytical results indicate that the primary step of electrochemical coal oxidation may be considered as an indirect one in which hydroquinone groups are oxidized to quinone groups by Fe3+, which is present under the experimental conditions because of the dissolution of the pyrite content of the coal.
