Abstract

Abstract A sensitive kinetic spectrophotometric flow injection method has been developed for the determination of mercury(II) over the range 150–2700 ng. The method is based on the catalytic effect of this ion on the reduction reaction of safranin by iodide. Method development includes optimization of reagent concentrations, pH, reaction temperature, ionic strength and flow conditions. The optimized flow injection manifold yielded a detection limit of 90 ng Hg(II). Chemical interference studies showed that the method also has good selectivity. The method was applied to the determination of mercury in contact lense cleaning solution and human hair.
