Abstract

The possible methods of measuring excess kinetic energy of fragment ions using a radio-frequency mass spectrometer are discussed. Retarding potential analysis before mass analysis is examined experimentally. Fragment ions from the simple molecules N2, CO and CO2 were examined in this way. It is concluded that the instrument can detect the presence of fragments with excess initial kinetic energy and that the results obtained are qualitatively similar to those obtained using magnetic deflection instruments.
