Abstract

This study is concerned with the large-scale kinetic energy transformations for the Air Mass Transformation Experiment (AMTEX) region during 13–16 February 1975, a period of cyclogenesis and subsequent formation of mesoscale cellular convection (MCC). Results reveal that subgrid-to-grid-scale energy exchange is prominent during non-MCC periods in association with deep convection. During MCC, the convection layer is marked by stronger generation of kinetic energy and dissipation energy loss than occurs in the non-MCC period. In addition a significant energy source is found during MCC in the downward transport of kinetic energy from the middle troposphere to the boundary layer.
