Abstract

Kinetics inherent in the direct method of Warburg for measurement of respiration rates have been described in terms of transfer constants for CO 2 and O 2 across the various phase boundaries and the rate constants for the reaction CO 2 ⇌ HCO 3 −. Methods for evaluation of the constants and typical measured values have been presented. The kinetic treatment allows specification of ( a) the steady-state concentrations of CO 2 and O 2 available to the respiring tissue and ( b) the time course of approach to the steady state.
