Abstract

In most eukaryotes 5 S ribosomal RNA is believed to be a primary transcription product. Heat shocked Drosophila cells, however, have previously been shown to accumulate a putative precursor, 5 S +, which is converted to the mature species if the cells are returned to the normal growth temperature of 25 °C. In this letter the kinetics of labeling of 5 S + and 5 S RNA are examined in cells maintained continuously at 25 °C. The labeling kinetics indicate that 5 S + RNA has a half-life of less than one minute and are consistent with it being an obligatory precursor to all of the 5 S RNA.
