Abstract

The build-up of surface relief during martensitic transformation is used for an optical study of the transformation kinetics. A simple apparatus is described, whose essential part is a fast response photodiode which measures the effective reflectivity of a sample during the transformation. The growth of martensite in an Fe-32wt% Ni alloy is studied with this kinephotometric device. Successive bursts of decreasing amplitude are detected during the transformation and the first burst duration is found to be about 5 μsec.
