Abstract

Adjustable mechanisms make it possible to use the same hardware for different input-output relationships. This paper presents a method of synthesizing adjustable planar 6-link mechanisms for function generation with dwells at the edges of rocking. The method of synthesis is analytical and graphical with characteristic charts. Dwell mechanisms are synthesized with use of 4-link mechanisms describing symmetrical coupler curves. The adjustment considered is the changing of a fixed pivot location, and the relationships between the adjustable parameters and properties of outputs such as rocking range, rocking center, and dwell periods of the above dwell mechanism are shown as characteristic charts. Examples include adjustable mechanisms which have been synthesized by the method developed here, and the results describe the adjustability of the 6-link mechanisms.
