Abstract

An analytical solution was proposed for the kinematic response of rectangular piles under S waves with the aid of a modified Vlasov model. A continuous displacement model was proposed to simulate the motion of soil-pile system. Using Hamilton’s principle, the proposed solution well captures the kinematic response of piles compared with the finite element solution. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the influence of cross-section shapes on the kinematic response of piles and underlying pile bending, Winkler modulus, shear stresses in soil, and inertia of soil and pile. The results reveal that pile bending dominates kinematic responses of piles.
