Abstract

The generalization problem in research is a complex one, and the aim of the present paper is to give an overview of that part of this complexity that concerns kinds of generalizations. With reference to a proposed model, five main kinds are defined, followed by a description of sub-cases generated by several classifications and their combinations. The term generalization is used in a broad sense as a statement of the transfer of “some information” from “some place” to “another place.” The account is meant to encompass generalizations in empirical research in education, psychology, and related sciences. Causal generalizations in quantitative research are focused upon, but the model is meant to also cover descriptive research and to be partly relevant to qualitative research, too.
