Abstract

Kievitone, an isoflavanone, occurs in hypocotyls of Phaseolus vulgaris L. infected with Rhizoctonia solani Kühn. This phytoalexin is also induced in bean pods in response to a 3·0 m m solution of CuCl 2. Approximately 50 μg kievitone is present per gram fresh weight of diseased hypocotyl. The ED 50 for inhibition of radial mycelial growth of R. solani is 60 μg/ml in PDA. Kievitone represents the principal antifungal component of “substance II”.
