Abstract

The uneasy relation of EU with Turkey becomes more complicated because of the basic principle conflicts on rejoining of Cyprus. The unsettled conflict about Cyprus reminds us the question on whether negotiations about Turkey and EU membership will continue. Meanwhile, EU, like Cyprus, demands opening of Turkish ports to Cyprus ships. Turkey refuses this demand and wants giving of permission to the Northern Cyprus to make direct trading with the European Union. EU refuses this because it does not want to recognize the Northern Cyprus. The problem is acceptance of the Greek populated southern part of Cyprus that did not accept rejoining to the European Union in 2004. Since that date, the Southern Cyprus blocks the EU membership of Turkey.
