Khrushchev in Astrakhan

Abstract

Accounts in Pravda and Izvestia of Khrushchev's September 1963 visits to Astrakhan, Kuban, the northern Caucasus, and southern Ukraine constitute a concrete on-the-spot picture of Soviet agricultural problems in Soviet terms, of interest in conjunction with Dr. Johnson's analysis. The account below of Khrushchev's conversations in Astrakhan on the future of the lower Volga area was excerpted from the October 23, 1963 issue of the Current Digest of the Soviet Press.
