Abstract

The chewing of khat leaves is a habit that has been prevalent in some parts of the world for centuries. Since their stimulant effect is dependent on the freshness of the leaves, the chewing habit has previously been confined to those regions where khat is grown. However, modern transportation has allowed its expansion and this has stimulated international concern. Khan and Kalix describe the pharmacology of khat, whose active constituent, cathinone, has amphetamine-like properties. They also consider the moral, social and economic consequences of its abuse.
