Abstract
Khan al-Lubban is a caravansarai located in the centre of the West Bank, some 45 km. north of Jerusalem, which served travellers and merchants on the ancient hinterland route between Damascus and Jerusalem. This study represents part of the outcome of the tenth season of the Medieval and Ottoman Survey, carried out during September 1998. The building has the familiar layout of an Islamic caravansarai consisting of a courtyard enclosed by vaulted ranges. Based on architectural and archaeological investigation, as well as the study of historical accounts, we have identified two major phases of construction: Ottoman and Mamluk.
