Abstract

Introductuon: Effective communication helps nurses building the relationships with others, what are foundations for comprehensive nursing services. Objectives: This study investigated nurses’ evaluation of their competencies in daily communication with colleagues and patients. Participants and Methods: With the cross-sectional descriptive design, data was collected by self-administered questionnaires from 125 nurses who were working in selected public health institutions of the Northern Mountains. Nurses were asked to rate their ability in communication with patients and their family, physicians, pharmacists, hospital staff, and other nurses against a 4-point numeric scale, ranging from be able to communicate from very easily (3 point) to very difficultly (0 point). Results: The overall score showed that nurses can communicate easily with others, with the mean score of 2.13 out of 3.0. Score of communication with other nurses was ranked highest (2.83/3), followed by with physicians and pharmacists (both scores were 2.18/3), and with hospital staff (2.14/3). However, nurses showed limited ability in communication with patients and their family by reporting a score of 1.95/3, which felt to the range of “difficult”. Conclusion: Nurses reported difficulty in communicating with patients and their family. However, they found it was easy to communicate with colleagues from both health professional and staff group.
