Despite the debate over free vs. fee libraries and services, libraries need to accept the responsibility of providing information to our users. Libraries, and fee-based services in libraries, need to lead the way in recognizing the need for libraries, developing the role of librarians as managers of knowledge, and creating our own future. The author makes the argument that knowledge work will be done by somebody, and if not us, then the end-user. Providers of fee-based services have already staked out our jurisdiction and are on the right track.
