Abstract

Virtual Reality (VR) is a new way of visualising and manipulating GIS data. Two-dimensional (2D) geographical information systems (GIS) data can be used, together with three-dimensional (3D) Computer-Aided Design (CAD) data, to generate a virtual world in which the user can navigate, query and manipulate the GIS and 3D CAD data. Over the past three years, we have developed the Key to Virtual Insight or K2vI system which is a VR interface on several standard GIS databases that supports visualisation, manipulation and editing of the GIS and CAD data in a virtual environment. The system uses a multi-view mode approach where each view mode has a preferred VR display.The system is used by the School ofArchitecture, Auckland University, New Zealand, to generate a 3D city model of Auckland. After completion of the model, urban planners will be able to employ K2vI as a design and analysis tool in their planning process. The system supports manipulation of the GIS and CAD data and will offffer functionality to perform analyses such as visual impact analysis and traffic flow analysis.
