Abstract

50mm diameter neutron tube has been developed for many years in Northeast Normal University. The tube was designed as a sealed ceramic tube, and the maximum neutron yield of the neutron tube was 1×108n/s, the design of neutron tube was based on the PIG ion source. To improve neutron yield, key techniques analyses are presented in this paper as follows: increase the acceleration voltage, enhance magnetic field intensity of ion source terminal, and optimize coating thickness of titanium target based on theoretic analyses and experiments. According to these analyses, neutron tube has been modified, test operation has been started. The improved 50mm diameter tube can achieve a performance goal of producing 1×109n/s over a long lifetime, and its stability is better than 2%.
