Abstract

This chapter discusses the differences as well the role of key performance indicators (KPIs) in project management. KPIs and metrics can be displayed in dashboards, scorecards, and reports. KPIs have been used in a variety of industries and for specialized purposes, such as: construction, maintenance, risk management, information technology, supply chain management, and so on. The ultimate purpose of a KPI is to identify what needs to be done to improve performance and keep the strategy on track. KPIs can be segmented or clustered per industry. They can also be reported as a group. This is common for business or financial KPIs. KPIs serve no real value if they cannot be measured with any “reasonable” degree of accuracy. Project managers and team members may need to attend training sessions on KPI identification, measurement, control, and reporting.
