S-wave velocities play important roles in pre-stack seismic inversion, AVO processing as well as seismic multi-wave data interpretation. However, the mineral compositions and pore structure are both very complex in carbonate reservoirs. To estimate S-wave velocity, pores of carbonate rocks are divided into four types considering pore shape and connectivity: vugs, interparticle pores, cracks and clay pores, the aspect ratio and porosity of each pore type are calculated by modifying the method proposed by Kumer and Han(2005) to adapt to the coexistence of four pore types. An inversion method for the bulk and shear modulus of mineral compositions based on adaptive genetic algorithm is proposed, using measured P-wave and S-wave velocity logging data in the whole work area as constraint. After this description of mineral compositions and pore structure, the S-wave velocities of saturated carbonate rocks are calculated using Patchy saturation theory. Finally, the S-wave velocity estimation method is applied to actual logging data and favorable results are obtained, which can provide benefit for carbonate reservoir interpretation and prediction.
