Abstract

Abstract: Key Concepts in Advertising articles provide short lectures on an important concept to help understand advertising's place in society, culture, history, and the economy. This article provides background information about the concept of ideology, defines ideology, and encourages viewers to apply the concept in their own analysis of advertisements. Examples to ground the discussion include Pink Floyd's song "Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)," a scene from the game show The Price is Right , a recitation of parts of Camille Rainville's poem "Be A Lady They Said," and a video from advertising executive Madonna Badger's #WomenNotObjects campaign. In the end, viewers learn that ideologies and the institutions through which they are expressed, such as advertising, buttress and reproduce distributions of power in society that privilege certain visions of the world over others. A recommended reading list provides other sources to learn more about the concept and its associated topics.
