Abstract

Background: Glycogen can be used for anaplerosis, via glycolysis, to regenerate depleted Krebs cycle intermediates, hence glycogen availability may affect the ability of the heart to oxidise ketone bodies. Consequently, the effects of varying cardiac glycogen content on (-hydroxybutyrate) βHB oxidation and glucose utilisation have been determined in the isolated rat heart.
