Abstract

Indonesia is an area that is vulnerable to disaster risk, including the province of West Sumatra. Disaster mitigation in reducing the risk of disasters is needed to be owned by the community. Disaster mitigation in reducing the risk of disasters is a skill that is needed by the community. In at-risk groups such as the elderly, the ability to mitigate, especially for self-interest, is very necessary. So that disaster mitigation education training activities are needed for the elderly group. The purpose of this study was to explore the preparedness of the elderly in dealing with earthquakes, with disaster mitigation education in RW 10, Pasie Nan Tigo Village. This research is a qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The ten participants were taken using purposive sampling technique in the interview process. The interview results were transcribed verbatim and processed to produce 3 main themes, namely, knowledge, attitudes and evacuation plan. The elderly already have knowledge about what to do to save themselves when a disaster occurs, where to go if a disaster occurs. Disaster mitigation education programs are known to improve the knowledge and skills of the elderly, so this activity needs to be carried out continuously and sustainably.
