Abstract

Low-achieving students often experience problems in learning mathematics, especially in Index Multiplication, one of the topics that students need to master. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effects of using the SIASAT acronym mnemonic technique with the help of index multiplication table and 'Think-Pair-Share' cooperative learning on the achievement of low-achieving students in index multiplication. This quantitative study used a quasi experimental design with two groups which comprised of 40 students in the control group and another 40 students in the treatment group. The control group followed conventional learning with teacher centered approach while the treatment group was exposed to the use of mnemonic acronym SIASAT, indices multiplication table and Think-Pair-Share cooperative learning. Findings showed that the students in both groups improved their scores from the pre-test to the post-test. However, the achievement of students in the treatment group was greater than the control group. This study has shown the effectiveness of using mnemonic acronym SIASAT, indices multiplication table and Think-Pair-Share cooperative learning in improving students’ achievement in indices multiplication. Hence, teachers need to be creative and innovative as well as proactive in developing various approaches, techniques and teaching aids that can help low-achieving students in learning mathematics.
