Abstract

The online movie streaming services market is now very competitive, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic that has hit our country. Netflix is one of Malaysia's most popular online movie streaming services in Malaysia. This study was qualitatively conducted to explore whether Netflix movies have an impact in terms of language, socialization and psychology in Malaysian society. The mapping of the location of the selected study was the Netflix user in Malaysia who used the platform to watch movies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Informants were selected using the purposive sampling technique in which this study interviewed 10 informants who are Netflix users and have watched movies on Netflix. The results of the study revealed that there were several effects of the movies shown on Netflix on the community in Malaysia during the COVID-19pandemic. In terms of language, the films shown on Netflix offer the opportunity to learn foreign languages, learn the storyline based on the subtitles provided, and strengthen a newly learned language. Additionally, other effects are also linked in terms of socialization which is the increase of anti-social traits. However, some claim that family ties are stronger although some are distracted by the use of gadgets. Although movies shown in Netflix can change a person's emotions which is related to the psychological effect, the content of unfiltered movies raises concerns, and the influence of foreign countries on Malaysian society raises concerns. There are also several other effects of films on Netflix in the Malaysian community, namely, in terms of the economic viability of television production, it can increase knowledge and has effects on health. It is hoped that this study can serve as a benchmark for future studies of movies streamed on Netflix.
