Abstract

Mutans streptococcus (MS) are considered as major bacteria in human dental caries. Many studies on transmission of MS in children have adapted mother as the main source of infection. So far there are stil few reports on transmission in a group of children such as in nursery. The purpose of this study is to determine the reports on transmission of MS in children at day nursery. Samples are the isolate of MS from 19 children in range of age 0-5 years old, 14 pairs of parents and 6surgery caretakers of a day nursery in Hiroshima City, Japan. The transmission of MS is determined by comparing the chromosomal DNA fingerprint of MS using restriction endonuclease EcoRI and HaeIII. The similarity of strain type of MS found between child and mother 33.3%, child and father 8.3% and child and other 58.4% including among the children. This study shows that in day nursery, beside mother, the source of MS transmission could be the person surround the chid. The environment of bringing up children also play role in transmission of MS beside the oral condition of the children.
