Abstract

AbstractThe nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of a series of protonated organic nitrogen compounds in trifluoroacetic acid solution have been studied. A direct correlation between the exchange rate of the ammonium protons and the acidity constant of the functional group is established. Substituted anilinium and pyridinium ions with pK values below 4 show coalescence for the signals of N⊕H protons and disappearence of the coupling with the α protons.
