Abstract

AbstractThis chapter proposes a fresh theological reflection on the dialogue between the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches (ECC) based on the concept of kenosis (self-emptying). The chapter begins by introducing the concept of kenosis in theology and ethics. This concept is subsequently applied to ecumenical relations. It is argued that, in order for ECC to accomplish their mission of being the “bridges” between East and West, their attitude toward the Orthodox should be kenotic, asymmetrical, and eschato-centric: ECC should consider themselves as a means of unity of the Body of Christ, reject the model of reciprocity, and embrace the eschatological perspective, which transcends the logic of mundane successes, and models itself after the “grain of wheat” which is not afraid to die (Jn 12:24–25).
