Abstract

Kenneth P. Johnson, MD, one of the pioneers in the use of disease-modifying therapies in the management of multiple sclerosis (MS), died in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 3, 2011, at age 79. Ken grew up in Jamestown, New York, the son of an engineer and a nurse. He received his BA from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey, in 1955 and his MD from Thomas Jefferson University Medical School in 1959. He completed a medicine internship and began neurology residency at Buffalo General Hospital, but left to enter the Navy in 1961. After completing his service at the Portsmouth Virginia Naval Hospital in 1963, he moved to the Case Western Reserve University, where he finished his neurology residency and then a neurovirology fellowship with Dr. Richard T.
