Abstract
Ken Packer began his research career as an inorganic chemist, but he became enthralled with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) when it identified a PhD reaction product as SF 5 OSO 2 F. He progressed, as a pioneer, to answer pressing materials science problems with application of NMR to materials from pharmaceutical compounds through to porous solids. He did this by forging strong collaborations with colleagues in academia and industry, eventually joining BP Research as head of Spectroscopy Branch before returning to academia. He was always approachable, warm, supportive and friendly, making many friends across the world. However, nothing gave him more joy than his family: his wife Christine, his children and grandchildren.
