Abstract
Creative thinking is one of the abilities that students must have to face the 21st century. The reality in the field shows that the 2018 UMMY Solok mathematics education students have not been able to directly solve math problems in various ways. So that students are thought not to have good creative thinking skills. Mathematical problems can be developed by providing open-ended problems, namely problems that have more than one correct answer or correct solution. By providing open-ended problems, students' creative thinking skills can be developed. With the ability to think creatively, a person is able to face the problems faced in the future. By knowing students 'creative thinking abilities, it can be seen that students' creative thinking processes are expected to be accustomed to thinking creatively in solving the problems they are facing. This study aims to describe the creative thinking process of mathematics education students of UMMY Solok in solving mathematical problems using an open-ended approach. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The subjects in this study were 9 students of UMMY Solok mathematics education class of 2018. The results showed that as many as 11.1% of students had the ability to think creatively in the less creative category, 55.6% of students had the ability to think creatively in the creative enough category, and 33.3% of students had the ability to think creatively with the creative category in solving math problems with an open ended approach
