Abstract

The emergency in Kelantan in 1997 was the last emergency in the country. Internal political crises within PAS arose after a group 20 passed the vote of no confidence against Datuk Mohamad Nasir, who was the Menteri Besar of the state in 1977. As a result, people went out to the streets to demonstrate. Before the announcement of the emergency in Kelantan on November 1977, the Federal Government under the premiership of Datuk Hussein Onn had discussions with Datuk Mohd. Asri Muda, the PAS President, but of no avail. Consequentially, the Kelantan state administration was put under the state director for 96 days in order to improve internal security. In the aftermath of the Emergency, voters in Kelantan rejected PAS in the state election on 11 March 1978.
