Abstract

There has been a great contribution of genetic engineering in technological advances especially in the field of biotechnology, medical as well as agricultural. In medical for example, discovery of effective treatment, pharmaceutical advancement and new vaccine discovery show that the application of genetic engineering does have impact on our daily life. In the agricultural sector, there has been an increase of profit due to the increasing output from crops as well as poultries industries. The tremendous growth of output is believed due to transgenic plant that was initially modified from an organism (known as genetically modified organism (GMO)). There are also several genetically modified foods (GMF) that are capable to enhance the level of nutrition in a particular product and at the same time increase the output. Different techniques of genetic engineering including functional reconstruction of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) technique, reproductive cloning, and therapeutic cloning were applied. Given the future potential and benefits of genetic engineering, the western and value-free scientists give particular attention on the cloning matters but pay less attention on concerning the moral and ethical consequence of it. Therefore, this article discusses religious point of view regarding the genetic engineering and give particular attention on its effect to the Muslim society. It focuses the application of genetic engineering from the objectives of syariah (maqasid syariah). On the other hand, it also discusses the Islamic religious requirements and ethics that?s must be complied especially those who are directly involved in this field.
