Abstract

We showed by experiments that a number of plants is able to germinate under water and that the seedlings are able to establish themselves at the river-bank. This applies not only to alpine and subalpine waterborne plants like Kernera saxatilis or Cymbalaria muralis, to species of the riparian Vegetation like Rumex stenophyllus, Leonurus marrubiastrum, Artemisia anniia, Epilobium parviflorum, but also to ruderal species of dryer habitats like Anthriscus cerefolium, Bromus tectorum or Hordeum murinum. Subhydric germination gives no recognizable benefit to the last group of species. But it is possible that this attribute is more often to be found with them than believed till now.
