Abstract

We were invited to comment on William Becker's December 7, 2001, Chronicle of Higher Education essay entitled How to Make Economics the Sexy Social Science. Although we aim to be helpful, no one should expect two cynical old economists to stick strictly to a standard of constructive comments. We have little quarrel with Becker's conclusion that economics is taught poorly in American colleges and universities. However, we do not believe that either the declining share of undergraduate economics majors or the persistently high proportion of class time devoted to lecturing by economics faculty constitutes evidence in support of that conclusion.
