Abstract
Sambas society has been shaped over a long history. Several folklores serve as the foothold in interpreting and referring to the dynamics of the past. This paper contains two popular stories, namely Sambas from the eternal friendship between Syamsudin and Saribas, and Sambas which is interpreted as three ethnic groups. The two stories became the basis for seeing the diverse Sambas. To reveal the diversity of Malay Sambas, the research was carried out in four stages of the historical method, namely heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. This study shows that the diversity in Sambas is recorded in the people’s collective memory, which aims to unite existing individuals.

Dalam dinamika politik Kerajaan Sambas, mengalami goncangan yang besar, yakni terjadinya pemberontakan oleh kongsi Cina dan berhasil dilumpuhkan pada pertengahan abad ke-19, dalam masa ini pula perlu dilihat bahwa munculnya Sultan yang karismatik yaitu Sultan Muhammad Syafiuddin II (1866-1922) yang memiliki latar pendidikan kolonial (Jaelani 2014:127-138) yang kemudian mendapat gelar Ridder van Oranje Nassau karena kiprahnya dalam membangun Sambas juga menjaga stabilitas keamanan, masa inilah disinyalkan sebagai masa di mana munculnya hikayat dan folklore kisah penyatuan tiga etnis yang dominan di Sambas

Dalam tulisan ini dimuat dua kisah populer tersebut, yaitu Sambas yang berasal dari persahabatan abadi antara Syamsudin dan Saribas serta Sambas yang dimaknai dengan tiga suku bangsa.
